South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk stunned the world on Sunday night (Monday morning SA time) when he stormed to victory in the 400m final in Rio, setting a new world record time of 43.03.

The 24-year-old South African set the Olympic Stadium into a frenzy with a superhuman dash, to become the first athlete to win an Olympic gold from Lane 8, and smashing Michael Johnson’s 1999 record by 0.15 seconds in the process.
